Sustainability in solar – materials, lifespan, climate impact
Sunsurf Solar actively wants to contribute to the green transition. For us, sustainable development is not an add-on – it is an integral part of our business strategy.
Four core focus areas
We work purposefully to minimise our impact on the environment and nature, and to ensure long-term accountability across all our operations. As part of this, we have identified four core focus areas that guide our sustainability work.
Climate & Emissions Reduction
Sunsurf Solar replaces fossil energy sources by producing clean electricity, while optimising energy efficiency and reducing CO₂ footprint.
Ecosystems & Biodiversity
Sunsurf Solar's systems are designed to integrate into aquatic environments: they reduce heat radiation, protect against algal blooms and preserve habitats.
Technology Development
Sunsurf Solar's products are designed to last for decades, minimise maintenance and enable recycling at end of life. Materials are sourced from ISO-certified suppliers within the EU.
Long-term Thinking & Circularity
Sunsurf Solar's business model is built on long-term economic and ecological sustainability. Circularity is already embedded – our solutions are designed for reuse and recycling at end of life.

Climate & Emissions Reduction
By installing floating solar panels, significant gains in energy and resource efficiency can be achieved. Each installation contributes to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by replacing fossil energy sources, and several tonnes of CO₂ can be saved every year. The solar panels also help reduce evaporation from water surfaces, which is particularly important in warmer areas where water resources are limited. In addition, the cooling effect of the water improves the panels' energy efficiency, enabling them to produce more energy than land-based solar panels.

Ecosystems & Biodiversity
Our floating solar panels create positive effects for ecosystems and biodiversity. The patented anchoring system reduces water turbidity, maintaining water quality and protecting biodiversity. Placing the solar panels on water surfaces also means they blend into the environment without disrupting the landscape. For agriculture, the reduced evaporation and the ability to combine with irrigation systems give farmers a more resource-efficient solution.

Technology Development – Design & Suppliers
Our floating solar panels are innovatively designed to interact with aquatic environments and maximise both economic and ecological benefits. They are manufactured from durable and corrosion-resistant materials such as aluminium and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), ensuring long service life and low maintenance. Components are manufactured by ISO 9000- and ISO 14000-certified suppliers, guaranteeing high quality and environmental awareness. The aluminium is sourced from Nordic raw materials and processed in Sweden, while the pontoons are manufactured from recycled material.
Sunsurf Solar & Agenda 2030
Sunsurf Solar's sustainability strategy is based on making a positive contribution to the UN's global sustainable development goals. Our solar solutions generate renewable energy with consideration for both people and nature.
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
We increase the share of renewable energy without burdening valuable land.
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
We develop innovative energy infrastructure that strengthens the resilience of tomorrow's energy systems.
Goal 13: Climate Action
We reduce CO₂ emissions through high-efficiency green energy.
Goal 15: Life on Land
Our solutions protect land and contribute to healthier aquatic environments.
